Academic Scandals: Spouses
This category includes spouses of academic administrators. We think they ought
to be held to a similar standard as their spouses. They are, after all, the
First Lady or First Gentleman of the institution. We do not include spouses of
professors here.
The Wife-Beater
We
hyphenate the expression because it’s not about an academic man who beat his
wife. No, it’s the wife of the president of New Mexico State University, that
is, a wife who’s a beater. While presidential spouses aren’t technically
academics by virtue of marriage, they are the first lady or first gentleman of
the institution. As such, we expect their behavior will be exemplary. But alas,
in this case the wife of the president attacked him while he was driving home
with her from an event. Looks like she may have been suspicious he was cheating.
We’re surprised it was she who called 911, but we give her credit for realizing
that she may have just committed a felony.

Presidential Spouses Misbehaving
When the female president of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater was forced
to step down, it wasn’t anything she had done. It seems her philandering husband
had been deemed a sexual predator by certain women on campus. Previous calls for
her to resign had been met with stiff resistance. But alas, when youre husband
cannot keep his hands off other women and is banned from campus, it’s pretty
hard to do your job. We’re not sure if they’re still together. If so, that is
one tolerant woman. A year after resigning, she retired. There are also
allegations that the university knew of his behavior but did not take action.
